Snapshot: Biking Sierra Madre

Sierra Madre Loop

Sierra Madre is the longest mountain range in the Philippines located in Luzon Island. It contains 1.4 million hectares of forest, representing 40% of the country’s forest cover and spans in the provinces of Quezon, Rizal, Bulacan, Aurora, Quirino, Nueva Ecija, Nueva Vizcaya, Isabela and Cagayan.

While its various summits are favorite for mountaineers, the roads and trails leading to some of its peaks are mountain bikers’ haven, such as in the mountains of Tanay in the Province of Rizal.

Amid the scorching heat of summer sun, it took us 17 hours of mountain biking for the Sierra Madre Loop. The loop is from Manila to Sierra Madre Hotel and Resort in Sitio Mayagay, Tanay and back via Marcos Highway, Tanay-Sampaloc Road and Manila East Road. From Metro Manila we traversed the towns of Cainta, Antipolo, Tanay, Baras, Morong, Cardona, Binangonan, Angono and Taytay, all in the Province of Rizal. Maximum elevation is more than 500 meters, passing along the edges of Mt. Balidbiran, Mt. Susong Dalaga, Masungit Rocks and the mountains and hills of Baras and Tanay.

Great job I hope I can also find time to do it and actually make it

  2. Traversing Sierra Madre needs high endurance and really fit body. Biking for 17 hours is not really a joke.

I remember when we did the Manila-Infanta-Manila via the new Marikina-Infanta Road. It took us 22 hours, including rests and swimming in Real.

Endurance is the key in surviving a 17-hour mountain bike tour like this.
