You have no choice but to familiarize your palate to the local taste, take whatever local foods available or bear with whatever stuff you have in your backpack and hydrate because you need to eat and drink while on the road to keep you going. You cannot afford to miss a sight, an event, an adventure or ruin your itinerary and your entire travel plan just because you are sick. Getting sick while traveling is definitely a big NO!
Needless to say, a strong immune system is a big factor in travelling. But eating and drinking alone are not enough to keep you healthy and fit, immunity goes beyond that. More often than not, we, travelers don’t get the right amount of vitamins and minerals we need to keep our immune system strong the whole day.
So how do we stay healthy while traveling? Well, apparently an apple a day isn’t enough to keep the sniffles away! How about following this nine simple ways to keep you healthy while on the go!
Relax, Rejuvinate & Refresh!
End your day with a bit of quiet time or a pampering massage. Light a few candles, put on soft, meditative music and just lay there in that bathtub; or treat yourself to a relaxing spa experience. Clear your mind before going to bed. Not only will you wake up feeling great, you would have given your immune system the much needed refresh.
More than a beauty rest, it is a body rest! So try your best to get 7-9 hours of sleep each night, and see what it can do to your immune system. An experiment at the University of Chicago proved that those who sleep, on average, 4 hours a night produce half the number of antibodies compared to those who sleep 7-9 hours nightly.
Staying active is a tad difficult while on the road since most of the time we are on a long train, bus, plane or boat ride. At the end of the day, the comfort of our bed is a magnet! But do you know that exercise stimulates the immune system, releases endorphins or the feel-good chemical and keeps our brain sharp? So spend some time in the gym of your hotel, jog in the morning or walk a lot to make sure to get your blood pumping and let some oxygen flow in your body.
LOL! (Laugh Out Loud!)
Cliché as it is but laughter is—yes; you know the jig—the best medicine. Hearty laughter not only reduces stress levels, but also increases production of white blood cells that fight infections. So the next time you laugh, don’t just make it a “He, he,” make it a “Ha! Ha! Ha!”
The big no-no! You might want to allocate the budget you allotted on cigarettes to other important matters because smoking yields purely negative benefits. It undermines even the most basic immune defenses. On top of that, it raises the risk of bronchitis and pneumonia.
Wash It Off
Wash your hands properly to avoid bacteria and infections. Sing the happy birthday song twice in succession—that’s how long you should be scrubbing and rub-a-dubbing your hands to keep it clean. Also, a hand sanitizer is useful for those times when a faucet and soap aren’t available.
Avoid Sugary Drinks
Consuming too much simple sugars suppress the body’s production of white blood cells responsible for combating bacteria. Avoid soda and synthetic juices —keep yourself hydrated with natural fruit juices, teas, or water instead.
Eat and Drink Well and Healthy
You can enjoy the local flavours and cuisines without sacrificing your health. Hydrate regularly and be mindful of the nutritional contents of what you are eating, as much as possible avoid fried and oily foods, too much carbohydrate and junk foods. Include high protein meals in your diet, protein helps resist infection and rebuilds muscles.
